Providing and protecting clean water has been one of our major passions since the early days of Aveda, and our ongoing partnership with charity: water continues to make a truly inspirational impact in bringing clean water to those in need. To celebrate this Earth Month, we want to see your Aveda beauty looks inspired by waterfalls, waves, rain, rivers and all forms of 🌊 water 🌊 . Enter your H2O-inspired artistry created with Aveda products by April 15 for a chance to have your submission featured on @avedaartists and win a special Aveda x charity: water gift set packed with limited edition product and prizes. ENTRY RULES: 🌊 Post an image of water that captures the essence of your Aveda artistry alongside an image of your work by April 15. Instagram Layout can be used to juxtapose your images. 🌊Tag your post with #AvedaH2OInspo and #AvedaEarthMonth Five finalists will be chosen by a contest panel led by @antoinettebeenders, and their images will be shared on the @avedaartists page. In closing of Black History Month and entering Women’s History Month, today we shed spotlight on an African American female icon - Mary McLeod Bethune. For African American women, getting the vote often didn't mean being able to cast a ballot. But Mary McLeod Bethune, a well-known activist and educator, was determined that she and other women would exercise their rights. Bethune raised money to pay the poll tax in Daytona, Florida (she got enough for 100 voters), and also taught women how to pass their literacy tests. Even facing off with the Ku Klux Klan couldn't keep Bethune from voting. Bethune's activities didn't stop there: she founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935 to advocate for Black women. And during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, she accepted a position as director for the Division of Negro Affairs in the National Youth Administration. This made her the highest-ranking African American woman in government. Bethune knew she was setting an example, stating, "I visualized dozens of Negro women coming after me, filling positions of high trust and strategic importance."

Our second Industry Spotlight in honor of Black History Month is Josephine Baker. Josephine Baker was a singer, dancer, actor and activist. During her early years, she was best known for her slicked down pixie cut. She began dancing on the streets when an African American Theater troupe discovered her. They were enumerated by her dancing expertise and signature look. Josephine Baker went on to not only perform in Paris, but helped fight the Nazi regime when Germany invaded Paris during World War ll. It is said she would pass on secrets or conversation she heard when performing in front of German officials (in invisible ink on music sheets, of course!). She was later awarded The Medal of the Resistance by the French Government for all of her resistance efforts. In 1936, she tried returning to the United States to perform, but was not received. Americans were cruel and unperceptive to such a powerful, strong and popular African American woman. She returned the the US in the 50’s and 60’s to help fight racism and aid the Civil Rights movement. Baker refused to perform to segregated audiences and wrote many articles to be published on the subject and spoke at events and rallies. Baker also did the March on Washington by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s side. Her opposition was later recognized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Our first Industry Spotlight in honor of Black History Month is Madam CJ Walker. Madam C. J. Walker (1867-1919) was “the first Black woman millionaire in America” and made her fortune thanks to her homemade line of hair care products for Black women. Born Sarah Breedlove to parents who had been enslaved, she was inspired to create her hair products after an experience with hair loss, which led to the creation of the “Walker system” of hair care. A talented entrepreneur with a knack for self-promotion, Walker built a business empire, at first selling products directly to Black women, then employing “beauty culturalists” to hand-sell her wares. The self-made millionaire used her fortune to fund scholarships for women at the Tuskegee Institute and donated large parts of her wealth to the NAACP, the Black YMCA and other charities.
